CATA announces support for SCR 71 (Sen. Bates)

The California Athletic Trainers Association is a proud sponsor of Senate Concurrent Resolution (SCR) 71 by Senator Patricia Bates proclaiming March 2022 as Traumatic Brain Injury Awareness Month in California, in an effort to raise awareness about this serious public health issue. More than 3.6 million Americans live with brain injury-related disabilities at a cost exceeding $76.5 billion annually. In 2015 alone, the California Department of Public Health counted 32,627 Californians hospitalized and 210,910 emergency room visits due to traumatic brain injury.

Sports injuries are one of the most common causes of traumatic brain injury and athletic trainers are on the front lines keeping our athletes safe. Raising awareness about the importance of screening and early detection for traumatic brain injury is key to improving health outcomes for people who have sustained a head injury.

To learn more about Traumatic Brain Injury you can visit the CA Department of Rehabilitation for more information and for a list of resources in California.
